The Cook's Oracle.  Containing receipts for plain cookery, on the most economical plan for families; containing also a complete system of cooking for Catholic families, being the results of actual experiments instituted in the kitchen of William Kitchiner. Edinburgh: Robert Cadell, 1836.  [7th edition].  Sm 8vo.  424pp., sm text engraving of chicken feet, the only illust. in the volume, illustrating that "Sportsmen will find the following rule of very great advantage to themselves and their Cooks, - to order their game-keepers (and observe the same themselves) to cut off a Claw of each Bird they kill, denoting the day of the week, thus, and the Cook should be in particular in keeping each killing separate." With 691 recipes including one for potato chips (!) and many for liqueurs, flips and punches, much advice about servants; tables, charts, index.  Contemporary morocco, tooled at outer edges, gilt lettering on spine, 4 raised gilt bands, corners slightly rubbed, sm tear to bottom of page 144 expertly repaired, sm 1/2 inch chip missing from top of page 424, not affecting info, some stains throughout, signature of previous owner done in brown ink with a flourish, else tight, generally Good.  Original title of this popular cookbook was Apicius Redivivus, first published in London in 1817.  Very collectible.
