Written in brown ink, signed & dated by county clerk as well as both men, with two small paper seals at right of men’s signatures. 6.5 x 8 in. 4 horiz. folds, slightly faded, else generally Good. Exact transcription below:

“Know all Men by these presents, That we Andrew L. Brown and Robert Brown both of the Town and County of New Haven are holden and stand firmly bound and obliged unto ERASTUS OSBORN, of New-Haven, in New-Haven County, Sheriff of said County, in the penal sum of Four Hundred Dollars.

to be paid to him said Osborn, or his heirs, Executors, A[d]ministrators or Assigns—To the which pay-ment, well and truly to be made and done, we the said Andrew L. Brown and the said Robert Brown do bind ourselves, and each of us, jointly and severally, our Heirs, Executors and Administrators, firmly by these presents. Signed with our hands and sealed with our seals Dated at New-Haven, this 14th day of June A.D. 1836

The Condition of this Obligation is such, That whereas the above bounden Andrew L. Brown is now confined in New-Haven County Gaol, by virtue of an execution in favor of Ephraim Camp of Waterbury in said County signed by R. S. Hinman, Clerk and dated 13th day of June 1836 for the sum of $196 besides Officer’s fees.

Now therefore know ye, That if the above said Andrew L. Brown shall well and truly keep and confine himself within the limits of the said Gaol, in which he is imprisoned, and not depart therefrom, but remain a faithful prisoner until lawfully discharged, and shall well and truly indemnify and save harmless the said Osborn from all loss, cost, trouble and demands whatsoever, which may arise, accrue or happen to the said Osborn, by means of the said Andrew L. Brown having the liberty of the Gaol Yard; then this Obligation ot be void and of none effect; otherwise to remain in full force, power and virtue in the law.
